Your tasks

You will establish a new research area in the Section and work independently in research and teaching. Together with your team, you will collaborate with other groups in and outside the Institute to conduct multi-disciplinary research projects on the core topics of the section and its partners, predominantly in Malawi. You will make an important contribution to the strategic development of the new programme area at UKB. Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing and leading an independent research programme, including the development and management of the group with staff and budget responsibility
  • Designing, coordinating, and conducting innovative, empirically driven implementation research in LMICs, primarily focussing sub-Saharan Africa and Malawi
  • Strategic development of the programme area at UKB by acquisition of external funding and co-authorship of competitive grant applications
  • Close multidisciplinary collaboration with departments, research groups, and clinical units at UKB, as well as with international academic and non-academic partners.
  • Independent organisation and oversight of clinical activities and health programmes in Malawi, including coordination between Bonn and Lilongwe
  • Supervision and academic mentoring of MSc students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers and their respective work
  • Coordination of ethics processes, reporting, and dissemination of results, including publications in peer-reviewed international journals and presentations at conferences.
  • Representation of the professorship in internal and external committees, networks, and strategic partnerships at university, national, and international level

Prerequisites

We expect an ambitious and creative clinical scientist who enjoys interdisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, you have the following qualifications:

  • board-certified paediatrician in country of residence, preferably with an academic degree (Dr. med./MD or higher) with considerable working experience in LMICs
  • innovative and rigorous researcher with publications in relevant national or international scientific journals
  • substantial experience and success in acquiring external funding for research, academic teaching and clinical programmes
  • didactic teaching skills and a high commitment to fostering young academicians
  • Excellent communication skills in business English and German, coupled with a service-oriented, proactive, and self-directed working style.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team, resilience under pressure, and the capacity to assert and represent professional positions appropriately
  • Fitness for travel in the tropics for assignments abroad in Africa and Asia
  • Interest in obtaining a PhD / Habilitation

Assets would be:

  • Further subspecialisation in an area connected to this professorship
  • Substantial international research and/or teaching experience (stays abroad, research collaborations) in an LMIC
  • Confident use of LMS, ILIAS or comparable
