Paediatric ETAT+ Training

The course aims to improve global child health by training healthcare professionals and teaching strategies for the triage and treatment of sick children in resource-limited settings. It introduces a well-structured, high-quality approach to pediatric emergency care that can significantly reduce child mortality in hospitals.

The ETAT+ Instructor Course is designed for former ETAT+ participants who have shown potential to become instructors. Its aim is to deepen their understanding of adult learning and help them develop the practical teaching and simulation skills needed to train others effectively. The course draws on teaching methods from the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and course content from the UK’s Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH). Before attending, participants prepare by studying the Pocket Guide to Teaching for Clinical Instructors and other course materials.

Participants will receive preparation materials and are expected to review selected topics beforehand. The course emphasizes interactive training sessions and role-playing exercises, each introduced by a brief lecture:

• Triage of sick children into three categories:
  • Children with acute conditions (“emergency signs”)
  • Children with urgent conditions (“priority signs”)
  • Children with non-urgent symptoms
• Assessment and emergency treatment of airway and breathing issues
• Bag-mask ventilation techniques
• Evaluation of cardiac status and level of consciousness
• Effective management of shock, coma, and seizures in children
• Intraosseous access procedures
• Classification and treatment of severe dehydration in children with diarrheal disease
• Management of acute severe malnutrition
• Care for sick newborns and premature infants
• Classification and treatment of burns and accidental injuries in children
• Planning and implementation of the ETAT approach within one’s own work environment

The course integrates theory with practical skills to equip participants for real-world scenarios.
